CC responds to competition regime plans
15 Mar 2012
The Competition Commission (CC) today welcomed the Government’s announcement of its plans for reform of the UK’s competition regime and committed to working with the Government and the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to make the reforms, which centre round the merger of the two competition authorities, work.
The Government’s announcement is available here.
CC Chairman Roger Witcomb said:
'The CC has been working closely with the Government as it has refined its proposals for reform of the competition regime. We share its ambitions for reform, and are pleased that it has decided to retain many of the features of the current regime which give it its high reputation at home and abroad. We will continue to work with the Government and with the OFT to secure the benefits from the proposed reforms, including the merger of the two competition authorities.'
Notes to editors
1. The CC is an independent public body, which carries out investigations into mergers, markets and the regulated industries.
2. The CC has a pool of around 40 part-time members (in addition to the Chairman and Deputy Chairs) from which it chooses those to sit on particular Inquiry Groups. Members are appointed for their individual experience, ability and diversity of background and many have active career interests. The appointment of members enables the CC to benefit from their relevant and current expertise in particular sectors or professions and supports a robust and fair decision-making process.
3. In Global Competition Review’s annual survey of the world’s competition regimes, the CC has topped the table for the last five years.
